Great Free VR Demo from the Franchise

Immerse yourself in the classic Halo environment using the technological wonders of virtual reality. Despite the fact that this isn’t a fully-fledged game, it certainly is an amazing insight into the Halo series and what’s possible when you take a legend of a game and ‘throw in a little VR’.

Can You do Battle in a Classic Halo Warfare Scenario

The game starts in a cargo bay on board one of the large vessels from the series. You’re guided by Cortana’s voice through a drill sequence that gives you the opportunity to look with wonder at the amazing surroundings. Prior to the action, you get to see your enemies in holographic form, including an elite and a grunt, to weigh them up so to speak. This is comparable to an experience you get whilst playing Doom. In previous 2D versions of Halo, you simply don’t get the sense of scale that you get in this VR version. It’s much more visceral, you really appreciate the size of your enemies and it’s really quite fantastic. You then find yourself holding a gun in each hand. Using the Windows Mixed Reality controllers, you reach out, aim and fire at the enemies. There’s only a few at first and they’re stationary, then you get moving targets to shoot at. It then goes up a notch when the targets have multiple hit points to aim at.

Short but Incredible

There are maybe ten waves of targets at the most and at the moment they don’t fight back. However, it is still an amazing look at where the Halo franchise might be heading, and it really looks great.

PROS

  • Incredible VR experience.
  • Great insight into VR.

CONS

  • Not a full game.
  • No interaction with enemies.
